MORTON PLANT MEASE 2ND CENTURY CAMPAIGN
In an era of rising health care cost, our challenge is not only to maintain community support for the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease, but also to preserve and enhance our current services and facilities. We hope that you will join us once again as we embark on the second phase of our 2nd Century Campaign, which requires raising our campaign goal to $110 million over the next five years.
As we embark on the most comprehensive campaign in our history, led by Chairman Keith Clark, only the infusion of private dollars can jump start this process. The Foundation’s Board of Directors has challenged our community to raise the additional $50 million in the following areas:
- Cancer Campaign, chaired by Ruth duPont: $10 million
- Campaign for Morton Plant North Bay Hospital: $5 million
- Women's Health Initiative: $25 million
- Campaign for Mease Dunedin Hospital, chaired by Wally and Bunny Dutton: $10 million
Cancer Campaign - Planning for a Brighter Future
The Axelrod Pavilion, scheduled to begin construction this fall, will be a new state-of-the-art facility on the Morton Plant Hospital campus thanks to a lead gift by Shirley Axelrod – a lung cancer survivor. This new facility will have a particular focus on Cancer Care services and will include oncology physician and surgeon offices, as well as the relocated Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center. Completion of this project is currently scheduled for Fall 2009.
The Axelrod Pavilion will build on our legacy of total cancer care – first brought together by Bernie and Mary Ann Powell in memory of Christy Powell Higgins. This new facility will provide much needed additional space for our ever-expanding cancer program, including the opportunity to add a breast MRI to the Morton Plant campus.
Additionally, with the addition of the da Vinci Surgical System® to our surgical suites at Mease Countryside and Morton Plant hospitals, Morton Plant Mease continues to set a new standard of care in the surgical treatment of prostate and gynecological cancers.
Da Vinci robotic technology enables surgeons to combine their skilled hands and critical judgment with the unprecedented precision and sensitivity of robotic assistance to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. The result is changing and improving the surgical experience for patients. To learn more about our committment to cancer excellence, please click here. To learn about the Dr. Peter W. Campaign For Morton Plant North Bay Hospital
A brand new Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is beginning to take shape. The $49 million new construction and expansion plan that will nearly double the size of the hospital campus is well underway. Construction of a three-story medical office building featuring physician offices, an expanded sleep disorders unit, laboratory services and outpatient rehabilitation services is anticipated to begin this summer. In addition to the medical office building, the new construction and expansion project includes a new three-story patient wing offering additional private patient beds, a new intensive care unit, cardiac unit, medical surgical unit, new respiratory care services and community education facilities. The project also includes a new walk-in clinic, expansion of the Mitchell Rehabilitation Hospital and renovations to the emergency room with improved efficiencies for patients and physicians.
The project creates a comprehensive, community-based medical complex that will allow Morton Plant North Bay to grow and change with the New Port Richey and West Pasco communities. Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2010. To learn more about Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, please click here.

Campaign For Mease Dunedin Hospital
From your brain to your back, from your hips and your knees, neurosurgery, orthopaedic and spine care are expanding fields of medicine. As the complexity and demand for these procedures grows, Mease Dunedin Hospital is evolving and changing with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art intensive care unit, surgery department and the creation of a specialty hospital. This $19 million, multi-phase project will encompass more than 51,000 square feet of new construction.
This initiative is vital to service the increasing number of patient visits, meet the growing and changing needs of everyone in our community, and enhance the facilities to match the quality of care provided by our physicians and nurses. The new surgical services department and intensive care unit will help to create a specialty hospital within the main hospital, concentrated on meeting the unique health care needs of patients who may suffer from severe back pain or require neurosurgery.
Expansion to Operating Rooms Planned to open in early 2009, the $12 million OR expansion includes increasing the number of operating suites from four to seven, and doubling their size to accommodate the increased demand, intricacy and the type of specialized surgical equipment that is required for neurosurgeries and orthopaedic procedures.
These new operating suites will also feature:
- 28,799 square feet of renovation - 2,475 square feet of new construction - Each room will be 603 square feet in size - Digital equipment and voice activation to view X-rays and images - Fully integrated electronic medical record system
New Intensive Care Unit The new $7 million intensive care unit, which will encompass over 16,300 square feet, will provide 20-beds for patients requiring intensive care. The unit is designed around the special needs of our valued patients with larger rooms for care and the patient’s family in a healing, spa-like environment. Increased efficiency is also an important element of the expansion and renovation design. The new ICU and respiratory care areas will be adjacent to each other, allowing respiratory therapists to be based near the patients they serve with the most frequency to accommodate all intensive care needs.
